Central Michigan Volleyball enters MAC play after a hard-fought battle with the No. 13 ranked Nittany Lions.
STATE COLLEGE, Penn. – A welcome "home" like no other for first year CMU Head Coach, Arielle Wilson, who returned to Rec Hall coaching against her alma mater, Penn State.
Wilson was honored pregame by the Penn State crowd, to a warm welcome. A four-time national champion and three-time All-American with the Nittany Lions between 2007-10 was recognized as one of the all-time greats of the program in State College.
CMU dropped the match, 0-3 to Penn State, but battled in every set. The Chippewas dropped the sets 21-25, 20-25 and 22-25. CMU moves to 3-9 overall, while the defending national champions, Penn State, advance to 6-4 on the season.
In set one, Central Michigan came out with the motivation and groove they ended the match against Princeton with on Saturday afternoon.
The Chippewas stayed within three points for the entire first set, until the final of 21-25. Taylor Cripe recorded back-to-back service aces to give CMU the 4-3 lead early in the match. Central Michigan led twice in the set, very early on.
CMU held a lead again early in the second set, holding a two-point advantage at 9-7, before the Nittany Lions rattled off a 7-2 run to take a 14-11 lead, forcing coach Wilson to take a timeout.
Set two ultimately went to Penn State, 25-20 over the Chippewas. An early timeout in the third set was called by Coach Wilson, at 6-3, in favor of Penn State. The Chippewas then posted a 6-2 run of their own, highlighted by Izzy Swiercz with two kills and an ace in the run.
CMU grabbed a 22-21 lead late in the set, forcing a timeout from Penn State Head Coach, Katie Schumacher-Cawley. Penn State took a 23-22 lead, and Coach Wilson needed a timeout. The Chippewas ended up falling to 0-3 but gave an effort that sets the tone for what is yet to come for the squad.
The match against the No. 13 Nittany Lions marks the first match for Central Michigan Volleyball against a NCAA ranked opponent since playing No. 7 Florida on Sept. 3, 2006.
Central Michigan will open Mid-American Conference play on September 25 when it takes on Northern Illinois in DeKalb, Ill. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. (ET).
