THE FACILITY
Central Michigan Baseball boasts of some of the top facilities in the Mid-American Conference, beginning with Keilitz Field at Theunissen Stadium and continuing with the Cleveland Family Performance Development Center, an indoor practice facility.
The stadium and field are named in honor of two giants in Central Michigan baseball history, Bill Theunissen and Dave Keilitz. Theunissen coached the Chippewas from 1953-62, and Keilitz headed the program from 1971-84. Both were standouts as CMU players and both served in several administrative roles during their time at the university.
Theunissen Stadium was unveiled in 2002, moving from its former locale north of Preston Street and adjacent to the famed Finch Fieldhouse, where now the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions building stands.
The baseball stadium was rechristened Keilitz Field at Theunissen Stadium in 2018.
The stadium's seating capacity is 2,046 and includes 400 chairback seats, concessions, restrooms, outdoor batting cages, and a press box featuring two radio booths. Keilitz Field at Theunissen Stadium provides a friendly and comfortable atmosphere for fans and players.
The spacious Keilitz Clubhouse is the Chippewas' home headquarters and includes a locker room area, meeting room, training room, coaches' locker room, and office.
The grounds include a second field directly to the west of the stadium, yet another resource that enables the Chippewas to host several camps and clinics along with high school, and travel-team games throughout the spring, summer and fall.
David Keilitz arrived at CMU as a student-athlete in the fall of 1960. In 1964, Keilitz became Central Michigan's first All-American baseball player. After serving the 1964-65 season as a graduate assistant, Keilitz was appointed coach of the CMU freshman baseball team and then was elevated to head coach. He began his head coaching career by leading CMU to a No. 1 national ranking and an appearance in the NCAA College Division national championship game. It would be the first of six NCAA Championship appearances for Keilitz's Chippewas.
While never experiencing a losing season in his 14-year coaching career, Keilitz guided the Chippewas to four conference championships, and was named MAC Coach of the Year four times and NCAA Regional Coach of the Year twice. He coached eight All-Americans and 51 of his players signed professional contracts, with seven eventually making it to the Major Leagues. In 1984, Keilitz was appointed as Central Michigan's athletic director. He served in that capacity until 1994 when he went to serve as the Executive Director of the American Baseball Coaches Association for 20 years and retired in May 2014. Keilitz also served as a member of the NCAA Council from 1989-92 in a variety of roles.
Bill Theunissen was a former Central Michigan athlete, coach and administrator. He was a Mount Pleasant High School standout who played baseball, golf, and basketball for the Chippewas before graduating in 1947. He worked as a professor of health and physical education in 1948, and was CMU's freshman coach in football, basketball and baseball. Theunissen became head baseball coach in 1953 and compiled a 10-year record of 151-114-1. In 1962, Theunissen became dean of the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, a position he served in for 20 years. He was also named the dean of the reorganized School of Education, Health and Human Services in 1982.AMENITIES
