THE FACILITY
Central Michigan can boast some of the top facilities in the Mid-American Conference and McGuirk Arena is one of the best multi-purpose faclities in the league.
McGuirk Arena is on John Kulhavi Court, part of the $22.5 million John G. Kulhavi Events Center that opened in December 2010 with a capacity of 5,300. The Arena is home to many of the Chippewas’ sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, wrestling, volleyball, and gymnastics.
The facility features a pair of club rooms, the largest of which is a 1,600-square-foot space with room for 130 Chippewa fans and plush leather-chair seating for 88. It also features a 360-square-foot outdoor patio that is available for receptions, meetings and banquets.
The renovation upgraded several of the basic amenities for patrons of McGuirk Arena. In addition to 1,400 square feet of dedicated concessions space, the number of restrooms in the facility was quadrupled. The chair-back seating ratio climbed from 14 percent to 41 percent, and a climate control system was installed in the facility.
The facility is now a prime host for many uses outside of athletic events, including speakers, concerts and trade shows.
Other functionality upgrades included a satellite training room, improved arena lighting and a brand-new state-of-the-art video scoreboard on the west wall.
Displays depicting CMU tradition and the history of Mount Pleasant also are present throughout the building. Two facility-length murals line the north and south concourse, which pay homage to figures throughout CMU history as well as other facilities and programs on campus.
An auxiliary gymnasium located just feet from the locker room and main competition area, is named after legendary CMU head coach Dick Parfitt.
James McGuirk, a Mount Pleasant native, was a major supporter of Central Michigan University and its athletic department. McGuirk graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1951 and served in the Army in 1953-54. He worked for Dow Chemical in the 1960s in the photography department and has been the owner/operator of United Apartments in Mount Pleasant since 1963. The McGuirks also owned McGuirk Sand and Gravel.
Former CMU Trustee John G. Kulhavi was a 1965 CMU graduate and Senior Vice President at Merrill Lynch in Farmington Hills.
