Freese worked for 33 years in the Central Michigan University Athletics Department, 29 of which were spent as the head coach of the field hockey team. She played field hockey at Ohio State from 1976-79 and breaking into coaching shortly thereafter as a graduate assistant at James Madison. She landed at CMU in 1986, hired by then-athletic director Dave Keilitz as the school's field hockey coach. She stepped away from that role in 2015 to become the university's executive associate athletic director/sport administrator for the final four years of her athletic career.
