THE FACILITY
Opened in December 2010, the John G. Kulhavi Events Center is the area’s premier cultural, athletics and entertainment center. With more than 94,000 square feet of available space, the Events Center serves as the primary venue for all major university activities, from commencement and the annual CMU Pow wow to concerts and business expos. The space also houses five of CMU’s athletic teams – men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, and the university’s nationally ranked gymnastics and wrestling programs. Various spaces within this year-round, multipurpose facility are available for organizations and community members to host special events. The flexibility of room size, furnishings and amenities available ensure there is something to fit your needs. The center features: A 10,000-square-foot glass-walled atrium, a redesigned arena with enhanced comfortable seating for 5,300, as well as upper- and lower-level private club lounge areas, A 10,000-square-foot practice facility, Mezzanine and outdoor patio space, Academic and cultural display areas, and Ticket office for all CMU events.
The events center and basketball court, within McGuirk Arena was renamed Kulhavi Court, in honor of former CMU Trustee John G. Kulhavi. Kulhavi was a 1965 CMU graduate and Senior Vice President at Merrill Lynch in Farmington Hills. Kulhavi was commissioned into the U.S. Army through the CMU ROTC program and completed active duty in 1969 as Brigadier General. He received the Distinguished Purple Heart Medal. Kulhavi has been named many times in Barron's Special Report on their Top 100 Financial Advisors, Top 1,000 Financial Advisors, and Top 100 U.S. Stockbrokers. He was named to Research Magazine’s “The Winners Circle” in 2006. In February 2012, he was elected to the Board of Directors of the U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities.
