Chippewas done in by a goal on one of eight first-half corner kicks for the Huskies
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Central Michigan Soccer came up empty Thursday night in a 1-0 defeat by Northern Illinois in Mid-American Conference play.
Â
"We missed the two best chances in the game." Head Coach Jeremy Groves said. "The amount of times we had dangerous services in the box, we have to get on the end of those things and finish."
Â
The Chippewas were knocking at the door throughout the match, first with an attempt well inside the 18' by Sofia Spano (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Bloomfield Hills) that floated over the south end crossbar in the 28th minute, a run carried and setup from the right side by Ella Betzold (Essexville, Mich. / Garber).
Â
In the second half, now trailing from NIU's 37th minute strike from its seventh of eight first-half corner kicks, Jordan Bailey (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Huntington Beach) fired from straight away on the 18' and grazed the crossbar on the north end. Camryn Dunn (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) set up the play with a clean tackle in the midfield in the 65th minute.
Â
"We didn't come away with anything to reward ourselves, which is kind of frustrating, especially for the players, who I felt like played pretty well tonight in spells."
Â
Bailey and Alyssa Di-Campli (Queanbeyan, Australia / St. Clare's) walked away with shots on-goal from the contest.
Â
Thursday night's matchup marked the final time the two programs will meet in a league match as the Huskies depart the MAC for the Horizon League in 2026.
Â
Central Michigan Soccer hosts Massachusetts for Senior Day Sunday (Oct. 5) at 1 p.m. ET. The Chippewas hit the road next weekend for Akron (Oct. 9) and Buffalo (Oct. 12).
