Chippewas finished fifth in 9-team field, just 3 shots out of 3rd place.
CHESTERTON, Ind. — The Central Michigan men's golf team finished fifth in a nine-team field on Tuesday led by Arie Jackman's third place finish at the Valpo Fall Invitational.
Jackman, who carded a 149 in rounds one and two on Monday, shot a 2-under par 70 on the final 18 holes on Tuesday. He rose through the field to finish tied for third, up from 12th and was second in the field with 14 birdies.
The Chippewas, who began the final round in fourth place, posted a 304 team total to finish at 902, one shot behind fourth-place DePaul and just three back of third-place Bradley.
"After round one I felt as though we did not play at the level that we are capable of and it's not just a sentiment that I felt, it was the sentiment that our Chippewas felt as well," said CMU coach Kevin Jennings, whose team opened on Monday with a first-round 304 and then posted a 294 in the second round. "They improved that by going out and beating that round by 10 shots to put us in a better position for today.
"Going into today, we were just wanting to compete the best we can. They did pretty well, we're not content with where we are or what we've done, but we see the bright spots and the opportunities to improve, and we're going to take advantage of both of those."
Host Valparaiso won the tournament with an 869 total. Medalist Caleb VanArragon finished at 15-under 201 to lead the Beacons. DePaul's Artemiy Yalovenko finished second at 1-over 217.
CMU's Easton Phillips, who shared 12th with Jackman on Monday with a score of 149, shot 77 (226) to finish 14th. He shot an even-par 72 in round one and another 77 in round two.
Sophomore Philippe Yturralde closed with an 82 to finish among a group tied for 24th.
CMU's Jeffrey Andrus shot 76 on Tuesday, rising nine places to a tie for 31st, while Chippewa Trey Rusthoven carded an 81 and tied for 43rd in the 62-player field in his first collegiate event.
Both Andrus and Rusthoven recorded an eagle, Rusthoven's in round two and Andrus' on No. 10 in round three.
The Chippewas are scheduled to play in the Virtues Intercollegiate hosted by Miami (Ohio) and Bowling Green, on Sept. 25-26.
"The No. 1 goal is to just compete the best that we can, as always," Jennings said. "We did a fairly decent job of that, but there's still room for improvement. We're not content or satisfied and we look forward for another opportunity to compete (next week)."
