Yturralde Tied for 3rd, Men's Golf 4th After Day One at Valpo Fall Invitational

Chippewas look to close first outing of the season strong on Tuesday
CHESTERTON, Ind. — The Central Michigan men's golf team made a solid start to its season-opening tournament on Monday as the Chippewas stand in fourth place of nine teams through two rounds at the Valpo Fall Invitational at Sand Creek Country Club.
Sophomore Philippe Yturralde, who highlighted his summer with a tie for second at the Southern California Amateur in August, shot a 2-under par 70 in the second round and is tied for third at 3-over. The 70 is Yturralde's career best. He shot 77 in Monday's opening round.
CMU's Arie Jackman and Easton Phillips are among a group tied for 12thafter both shot 149 on Monday. Jackman, a senior, opened with a 76 and then shot 73 in the second round; Phillips, a sophomore, shot 72-77.
The Chippewas' Jeffrey Andrus and Trey Rusthoven are among a group tied or 40th in the 62-player field after both totaled 156 on Monday. Andrus shot 79-77, while Rusthoven, a freshman playing in his first collegiate event, shot a second-round 2-over 74 after an opening-round 82.
Rusthoven was one of six players in the field to make an eagle on Monday. His came in the second round on the 503-yard, par-5 first hole.
Jackman made nine birdies, the second-highest total among all the golfers, over his 36 holes, while Yturralde carded seven birdies to tie for third in that category. Phillips made 23 pars to tie for third in the field, and Yturralde played the par 4s in an average of 4.05, the second-best average on the day.
The Chippewas opened with a 304 team total and then rebounded with a 294 for a 598. They trail third-place DePaul by just two shots.
Host and defending tournament champion Valparaiso leads the tournament at 577. The Beacons opened with a 290 and then totaled 287 in the second round. They lead by 16 shots over second-place Evansville.
Valparaiso's Caleb VanArragon shot and 11-under 133 (66-67) and leads the tournament by 12 shots over DePaul's Artemiy Yalovenko.
The final round is scheduled for Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. (ET).
