CMU junior sets modern-day men's golf program records for 18, 36 and 54 holes
MONTGOMERY, Texas – Central Michigan's Arie Jackman shot a 3-over 75 on Tuesday in the final round of the Huntsville Toyota Bearkat Invitational at Walden on Lake Conroe Golf Club.
Jackman finished the 54-hole event with a 2-under 214 total and tied for ninth in the 88-player field.
It is the best finish for a CMU men's golfer, and the first top 10, since the program's rebirth this season after a 36-year hiatus.
The previous best finish by a Chippewa golfer this season was a tie for 27th by Philippe Yturralde at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational in September.
On Monday, Jackman set the modern-day 18-hole program record with a 3-under 69 in the opening round and then shot a 2-under 70 in the second round for a 139 total, also a modern-day 36-hole record.
His 214 total is the best for 54 holes by a Chippewa this season. He entered the final round at 5-under and in a seven-way tie for second place.
Jackman, a junior transfer from Grand Rapids Community College, is the lone non-freshman on the CMU roster. He led the Chippewas to a 310 team total in Tuesday's final round as CMU finished in 13th place in the 14-team field with a 911 total.
Also for CMU on Tuesday, Easton Phillips shot 77, Orlando Coons and Ethan Jaehn each posted a 79, and Jeffrey Andrus carded an 84.
Phillips finished with a 229 total; Coons, 233; Jaehn, 235; and Andrus, 246.
The Chippewas are scheduled to play in the Indiana Hoosier Collegiate on Saturday and Sunday, April 8-9, in Bloomington, Ind.
Phichaksn Maichon of Texas A&M closed with a 5-under 67 to finish with an 11-under 205 to earn medalist honors. Bret Gray of host Sam Houston State finished in second place, five shots back, after a final-round 6-under 66.
Sam Houston State posted a 277 team total on Tuesday to finish at 842. The Bearkats won by 26 strokes over second-place North Alabama (868). Stetson (869) was third.
