MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. â€" Chris Fowler scored 13 points to lead five Chippewas in double figures Saturday as the Central Michigan men's basketball team downed Division II Ferris State, 77-63, in an exhibition game at McGuirk Arena.
The Chippewas play host to Jacksonville State in their season opener at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13.
Braylon Rayson and Rayshawn Simmons added 11 points each and Luke Meyer and Austin Stewart had 10 apiece for the Chippewas, who never trailed and enjoyed a double-digit lead throughout much of the night.
"It felt good to get out there against someone else and kind of get some of the rust off," Simmons said. "That was a very good team I felt like.
"We treated that game just like Friday coming up, just like Jacksonville State. We prepared for them just like we will for Jacksonville."
The Bulldogs, who finished 23-9 and won the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament last season, got 16 points from Jared Stolicker and 10 from Drew Cushingberry.
Stewart and DaRohn Scott led CMU with eight rebounds apiece, while Rayson and Simmons each had four assists. The Chippewas led at halftime, 42-30, and stretched their lead as high as 22 points late in the second half.
CMU made 33.3 percent (12 of 36) of its 3-point attempts, while holding Ferris State to 21.2 percent (7 for 33).
"Give credit to Ferris State," CMU coach Keno Davis said. "They've been a quality program for as long as I've been here, and a lot longer before that. We knew that they were going to come in here with some great talent, some great coaching, and they gave us everything that we wanted out of an exhibition game.
"I think we're an improved defensive team from where we were last November. I think we see some things that we need to improve. But defensively, rebounding, the offensive execution, there's a lot of areas that Ferris State exposed and that's good for us."
