Yturralde sets, ties program marks with 6-under 64; CMU sets program records for team 18- and 36-hole scores
MUNCIE, Ind. – Another day for the Central Michigan men's golf team.
More records.
Philippe Yturralde shot a blistering 64 in the second round on Saturday and the Chippewas set two team scoring records on the opening day of the Earl Yestingmeier Invitational at Delaware Country Club.
Yturralde's 64 is a program record for aggregate score and his 6-under on the par-70, 6,624-yard layout ties the program mark for score in relation to par.
His round spearheaded a Chippewa charge up the team standings. CMU opened with a 287 team score and then posted a program-record 270 in the second round.
The Chippewas' 36-hole 557 total is also a program best, bettering the 570 they posted 11 days ago in the final round of the Joe Feaganes Invitational in Huntington, W. Va. Their previous program 18-hole mark, 279, came in the final round in Huntington.
"I'm a big energy guy and I've got my blue-collar crew right now and these guys are not afraid to go get it, to get in there and get it done," CMU coach Kevin Jennings said. "It makes it fun because then you can coach them and that's kind of what I did today with a couple of the guys. Their energy has changed and shifted to more what I desire for the program.
"We've got guys who are with us who now have anywhere from two to four years of (NCAA) Division I experience, and they work hard and they use their God-given skill sets. When you mix good people, hard work, and focus you tend to see some good things."
The 270 moved CMU from a ninth-place tie to sixth place in the 13-team field. The Chippewas stand three shots back of fifth-place Belmont and five behind of fourth-place Robert Morris. They are six shots ahead of two teams tied for seventh place.
"It was just us continuing to stick to our strategy and course management that we had discussed for this golf course," Jennings said of his team's second-round improvement. "They were able to apply it a little more readily and they got a few more putts to drop and that makes the day a little better."
Host Ball State, playing on its home course, leads the tournament at 536 (266-270). CMU's second-round 270 tied Ball State for the best second-round team score.
The final round of the 54-hole tournament is set for Sunday (9 a.m.).
Yturralde, who opened with a 1-over 71, made seven birdies against just one bogey in his second round. His 64 tied for the best score of the day, and it catapulted him up 24 spots on the leaderboard and into a tie for seventh place, six shots behind Ball State's Luke Johnston, who stands at 11-under after shooting 65-64.
A redshirt junior from La Mesa, Calif., Yturralde held the previous program aggregate scoring record, 66, which he posted on Sept. 25, 2023, in the Virtues Intercollegiate in Nashport, Ohio.
He was joined on Saturday in the go-low club by teammate Keith Hunter, who posted a second-round 4-under 66 after opening with a 3-over 73. Hunter is tied for 18th place at 1-under 139. His 66 tied for the fifth lowest second-round score in the 84-player field.
"Tenacity and resilience," Jennings said of the round-to-round improvement by both Yturralde and Hunter. "In the first round (Yturralde), and Keith, they had some challenges as we can have in golf and in life from time to time.
"That's where I earn my money as a coach; I was able to get them on track and get them to understand where their minds should be and get them to dig in and hold their ground, so to speak, and then it was, let's gain some ground. We conveyed that message across the board and we pretty much, as a team, dug in and climbed our way back to where we think we should be. Looking forward to trying to position ourselves well (on Sunday)."
CMU's Jeffrey Andrus and freshman Hudson Vedder also improved from the first round to the second on Saturday.
Andrus opened with a 2-over 72 and then posted a 1-under 69 and is among a group tied for 31st at 1-over 141. Vedder, playing in just his second collegiate tournament, shot a second-round 1-over 71 after opening with a 76. He is among a group tied for 69th at 147.
CMU's Jeffrey Sager opened with a 1-over 71 and then shot an 8-over 78 and stands tied for 78th at 149. The Chippewas' Nicholas Kilgore, playing as an individual, shot 83-75 – 158.
