Philippe Yturralde and Easton Phillips saw great improvement from last year's tournament; Jackman closes collegiate career
WESTFIELD, Ind. – The second season of the modern era of CMU Men's Golf drew to a close on Sunday, capping a year of growth and improvement for the young team, which graduates senior Arie Jackman and anticipates the return of six soon-to-be juniors and two freshmen, soon sophomores, for the 2024-25 season.
Though the Chippewas finished 8th of 9 teams at the 2024 Men's Golf MAC Championship at The Club at Chatham Hills, Head Coach Kevin Jennings noted the maturity his team has showcased through the year, as the program continues to take steps forward.
"We see the indicators of growth are there," said Jennings of his team's season performances. "Individually, everyone at some point had a great round, two rounds, great tournament. That there shows the growth and development of all of our players.
"Overall, I saw a lot of maturity out of my team, and everyone will continue to elevate because of that. It allows us to continue to see the progress that we are making; that's the thing that I am the most proud about, the fact that they are maturing as young men and that is evident in the direction that they are moving in their play."
As a team, CMU shot 901 (+37), the result of Friday's 297, Saturday's 304, and Sunday's 300. Leading the charge for CMU were Philippe Yturralde and Easton Phillips, sophomores who both tied for 39th in last year's Championship.
"Again, I thought considering the fact of where we are within our program, the guys did very well," Jennings said. "Philippe and Easton played better than they did last year in the Championship, which is improvement, progress and a good indicator for our future.
"We finished right where we were seeded, we knew that there was more out there for us, and we almost were able to take over 7th place. We were out of 7th by one shot."
Leading CMU by just one stroke was Bowling Green, which carded 299-292-309 – 900 as a squad.
Ball State combined for (-10) 854 to emerge as the team victors, while Toledo's Barend Botha claimed his second consecutive individual MAC Title, finishing with an 11-under 205.
Yturralde, the Chippewas' No. 1 player in the lineup, finished tied for 12th, 2-over par with a total of 218. In the three-day span he shot 71, 73 and 74, respectively. The sophomore led the field in par scoring with 37.
Phillips shot a 2-under 70 on Sunday, a significant improvement from Friday's 78 and Saturday's 76. He finished tied for 27th with a score of 224 (+8), finishing the weekend with 10 birdies and 31 pars.
Tied for 29th was Jackman, the Chippewas' lone upperclassman. The senior, a transfer from Grand Rapids Community College, capped his two-year career at CMU on Sunday.
"We were definitely blessed by the presence of Arie," said Jennings of Jackman, the program's first graduating senior since its return. "He was very helpful in allowing us to begin setting the foundation for Chippewa Men's Golf. We're very grateful for his contributions on and off the golf course to our program, to our community, and to the CMU community.
"We are happy to welcome him into the group of CMU alums, and very thankful that he chose to be a CMU Chippewa. I know that his future will be as bright as his time with us, if not brighter."
Jackman shot 72, 75 and 79 through the three-day Championship, respectively. He totaled 32 pars on the weekend and carded nine birdies.
Following Jackman were sophomore Jeffrey Andrus, who finished 40th with a score of 234, and freshman Trey Rusthoven, who shot 78 on Sunday to finish 43rd.
As a squad, the Chippewas amassed 40 birdies and finished second in par scoring with 154 total between the five competitors.
"We are very much looking forward to the future and are very excited about our future," Jennings said, hinting to the program's 2024-25 season, its third season, which will begin in the fall…
…and to truly conclude the 2023-24 season, Jennings delivered his routine closing remark:
"as always, Fire Up Chips."
