Chippewas take 6th on double playoff rules; Orlando Coons, Philippe Yturralde and Arie Jackman record wins
DADE CITY, Fla. – Central Michigan Men's Golf wrapped up the MAC/A-10 Match Play Challenge on Tuesday, where the Chippewas finished 3-3 against Dayton at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club.

The playoff rules, which determines the tiebreaker for fifth place, went in favor to the Flyers, who finished the match with six remaining holes to be played over CMU's five.

The sixth-place Chippewas recorded wins from Orlando Coons, Arie Jackman and Philippe Yturralde.

"I think (match play) is a wonderful way to start the year," said Head Coach Kevin Jennings. "This is probably the best way to start, rather than stroke play, because it allows us to not be perfect but still get some reps and competition in.

"It's a great way for us coaches to get a glimpse at our roster and check the depth of the roster going into the spring season. We really welcome the opportunity to play in an event like this, we really are fortunate and blessed to play in an event like this because it allows us to do so. We're very excited, we were able to check the depth and we'll utilize what we learned going forward."

Coons was the first of the pairs to finish, winning 7 and 5. Yturralde won, 2-up, Jackman 1-up. Jeffrey Andrus dropped his match, 2-down, as did Easton Phillips, 1-down, and Tyler Frechette, 7 and 6.

"I think the entire team played very well," Jennings said. "Yesterday in our first match against Richmond, our guys were competitive throughout the match. At the end, we didn't beat ourselves. We executed and stuck to our strategy as well as our game plan, which was to go out and make as many pars as we can, not beat ourselves, minimize the big numbers and they were able to go out and follow through with that.

"I'm very excited, very happy and proud of the guys for being able to do that. We're in the process of learning, we just need to close out our matches and finish, and run through the tape, not to the tape. That was a lesson learned, and they were able to apply that in (the win over Loyola). Today, the guys got out there and competed well, it went down to a double playoffs to where we finished 6th in match play with programs that are well established."

Host Ball State won the tournament with victories over Ohio, George Washington and runner-up Eastern Michigan.

The Chippewas look onward to stroke-play for the rest of the regular season, as they take on the Peoples Golf Championship Presented by Sea Palms Resort in St. Simons Island, Ga. The three-day tournament, hosted by Western Carolina, from March 7-9.

"I'm very proud of the team and happy for the progress that we're making," Jennings said. "We're all very excited for the future and what we have coming to us."
