MUNCIE, Ind. – The Central Michigan golf team turned in its best round of the tournament on Saturday in finishing in a tie for ninth place in the 15-team Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational at Delaware Country Club.
The Chippewas shot 291 on Saturday after opening on Friday morning with a 295 and following on Friday afternoon with a 303. CMU, which finished with an 889 total, entered Saturday's final round tied for 13th in the team standings.
It was CMU's first intercollegiate men's golf tournament since 1985.
"I think the new Chippewa men's golf program had a pretty solid debut," coach Kevin Jennings said. "We faced a good level of competition there and I thought that if we could finish in the middle of the pack with such a young group that that would be a good position."
Orlando Coons and Philippe Yturralde both shot a 2-over par 72 on Saturday to lead the Chippewas. Jeffrey Andrus followed with a 73, Ethan Jaehn shot 74 and Ari Jackman posted a 78. Jackman, a junior, is the lone non-freshman among the five Chippewas who played in the tournament.
The Saturday scores for Jaehn, Coons and Yturralde were their respective best of the tournament and the Chippewas' 291 was their best of the tournament.
"The last round we made a big jump," Jennings said. "It showed how much we're learning from what we're doing and we're very excited to continue to compete and learn how to compete at a higher level."
Yturralde finished among a group tied for 29th at 10-over 220, while Andrus finished at 11-over 221 and tied for 33rd in the 81-player field.
Jackman finished at 226 and tied for 55th; Coons tied for 60th at 228; and Jaehn tied for 69th at 231.
Wright State posted a 286 team score on Saturday to win the tournament with an 846 total. The Raiders finished 13 shots ahead of Ball State, the tournament host.
Joey Wiseman of Ball State and Mikkel Mathiesen of Wright State tied for medalist honors. Both finished at 2-under 208.
The Chippewas are scheduled to play in the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational in Barboursville, W. Va. Sept. 12-13. Scheduled to join the Chippewas and host Thundering Herd in the 54-hole stroke-play tournament are Belmont, Youngstown State, Purdue Fort Wayne, Eastern Michigan, Appalachian State, Cleveland State, Morehead State, Northern Kentucky, Longwood and Butler.
