MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan field hockey team fell just short on Friday dropping a 3-2 decision to Bellarmine in its Mid-American Conference opener at Cristy Freese Field.
Kate Biglin and Amelia Lane scored for CMU in the first and third quarters, respectively, but the Chippewas (1-6) never was able to gain the lead. It was the second goal of the season for both Biglin and Lane. They share the team lead in that department with Alice O'Hagan.
The Chippewas fell into a 1-0 deficit in the first quarter on a corner shot by Knights midfielder Julia Doornebos. Biglin scored early in the second quarter unassisted to tie it.
Bellarmine forward Amber Hofenkjerembo scored with two seconds left in the half for a 2-1 lead. Lane scored on a rebound early in the third quarter to re-tie the game, 2-2.
Just 36 seconds after Lane's game-tying goal, Hofenkjerembo scored again to put Bellarmine in front for good.
CMU trailed, 10-5, in shots on goal and 8-5 in penalty corners.
Lane led the Chippewas with two shots on goal, while Biglin, Alice O'Hagan and Kaitlyn Bowker one each.
Freshman Maja Halasz started in goal for the Chippewas and made three saves. Katie Maxim made four saves in the final 21 minutes.
The Chippewas are scheduled to play MAC opponent Appalachian State (3-2) on Friday, Sept. 23 (5 p.m.) at the Mountaineers' Brandon & Erica M. Adcock field. The Mountaineers are set to open league play with Kent State on Sunday after falling in overtime, 2-1, to Duke on Friday.
