Baseball Rebounds To Even Series With Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Central Michigan baseball team paid no mind to the cold and windy conditions on Saturday, breezing through Iowa, 10-1, in the second of a three-game nonconference series at the Hawkeyes' Duane Banks Field.
The Chippewas (10-9) and the Hawkeyes (11-9) will close the series with a single game on Sunday (2 p.m. ET). Iowa won Friday's opener, 7-4.
"I thought we really played good, competitive baseball," CMU coach Jordan Bischel said. "I was a little disappointed in how we approached it (on Friday) and I thought a lot of the things that we talked about we did a better job of today.
"Our pitchers attacked hitters well and our hitters competed well with two strikes, which was a big factor in the game. They just battled all day. (Friday) we had not just walks, but wild pitches and different things that gave (Iowa) too many free bases. I thought we managed that a lot better today in those two areas."
The Chippewas scored four runs in the third inning, three in the fourth, and two in the fifth in building a 9-0 lead.
Robby Morgan hit a two-run homer in the fourth, but outside of that big blast – Morgan's second of the season and the Chippewas' lone extra-base hit of the game – CMU scored in much more Chippewa fashion, taking full advantage of 11 walks, three Iowa errors, sacrifice flies, passed balls and wild pitches.
Garrett Navarra (3-2) took the mound midway through the fifth inning and pitched 3 2/3 frames for the win. He struck out six, walked one and allowed three hits.
CMU starter Andrew Taylor pitched three innings, striking out seven and walking one in throwing 64 pitches. Clayton Brock worked 1 1/3 innings in relief, and Ben Vitas hurled the final frame, allowing one hit and striking out one.
"(Navarra) is such a versatile player for us," Bischel said. "Today it was on the mound, but he also had a big RBI hit for us and a steal of home on a play.
"What's great about him on the mound is that he doesn't really care what the situation is, he's just going to go out and compete. Start, relieve or close the game, it doesn't really matter to him, he just wants to be competitive with the baseball and he did a great job today."
Mario Camilletti, Jakob Marsee, Danny Wuestenfeld and Navarra each drove in a run. Wuestenfeld led the Chippewas in hits with two.
"It's going to be challenging conditions again (on Sunday), it's going to be cold again," Bischel said. "It's just a matter of going out there and playing with tremendous energy, doing little things and doing things we did today; staying clean with the baseball, competing with two strikes, and battling against a very, very good Iowa team."
