Baseball Drops Opener In South Carolina

The Chippewas are scheduled to play Coastal Carolina on Saturday (3 p.m.) before wrapping up the weekend against the Mountaineers on Sunday (11 a.m.).
The Chippewas trailed 7-2 after West Virginia's six-run outburst in the third inning. Their deficit grew to 13-2 before the Chippewas, the home team, scored three runs in the eighth inning and three more in the ninth to pull within five runs.
CMU, which collected 12 hits, stranded 14 base runners and took advantage of three West Virginia errors. The Chippewas did not commit an error.
Jordan Patty started and took the loss. He allowed nine runs on seven hits, walked four and struck out one over 3 1/3 innings. Eight others took a turn on the mound for CMU.
West Virginia used 10 pitchers. The second, Beau Lowery, earned the victory.
Adam Proctor and Jakob Marsee both homered for CMU. The homer for Proctor, a senior transfer from Michigan State who started at catcher, came in his first at-bat as a Chippewa.
Marsee had three hits and drove in four runs and Jacob Donahue finished with two hits for CMU.
