MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan softball team will open the 2018 season in early February at the Mercer Invitational in Macon, Ga., kicking off a 47-game schedule spread over three months.
The Mercer Invitational, during which the Chippewas are scheduled to play the host Bears, Morehead State and Appalachian State, begins on Feb. 9 and is the first of three season-opening tournaments in warmer climes.
CMU is also slated to play in the Liberty Softball Challenge in Lynchburg, Va., and the USF Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater, Fla. The Liberty tourney comprises three games from Feb. 16-18, while the Under Armour Invitational comes during Spring Break. CMU is slated to play 12 games over eight days in Florida.
CMU’s first game in the state of Michigan is scheduled for March 21 at Michigan, and then the Chippewas open defense of their Mid-American Conference regular-season championship with a three-game series at Ohio on March 23-24. The Bobcats are the defending MAC East champions.
The Chippewas’ home opener is a nonleague doubleheader with Valparaiso on March 27. Their first MAC home series is slated for March 30-31 with Miami (Ohio).
All seven of CMU’s MAC series comprise a single game followed by a doubleheader, except its three-game set with Western Michigan. In that case, the teams are scheduled to meet in a twinbill in Kalamazoo on Tuesday, April 3, and then play the rubber match in Mount Pleasant on Wednesday, April 11.
CMU will also take on MAC foes Buffalo, Eastern Michigan and Toledo at home. The Chippewas will play Ball State and Northern Illinois on the road. CMU’s final home series is April 27-28 against the Rockets; it closes the regular season the following weekend (May 4-5) at NIU.
The MAC Tournament, once again scheduled for Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio, is scheduled to begin on May 9.
CMU will also play midweek nonconference games in April at Oakland and at Michigan State.
