MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The Central Michigan lacrosse team will host the 2020 Southern Conference Championship Tournament, the league announced today, Thursday.

It will be the first championship tournament, in any sport, in the Chippewas' Lacrosse-Soccer Stadium, which opened in fall 2015.

CMU begins its third year of varsity lacrosse on Feb. 16 with a game at Marquette.

The Chippewas played in the Atlantic SUN during their first two years and joined the SoCon after the 2017 season. Other former ASUN members Detroit Mercy and Delaware State are also first-year members of the SoCon.

Mercer, Furman and Wofford are the league's other three schools that sponsor women's lacrosse.

"I am thrilled with the announcement that CMU has been selected to host the 2020 SoCon Championship," Chippewa coach Sara Tisdale said. "When lacrosse was added to the CMU athletics lineup and the state-of-the-art facility was under construction, all was done with the intent of contending for and hosting conference championships.

"We are excited to bring SoCon lacrosse to CMU and host what will be a first-class championship."

The SoCon Tournament format is the same as that of the ASUN: The top four teams in the regular-season standings advance to the league tournament. The regular-season champion is the No. 1 seed and will face the fourth-place team - the No. 4 seed - in a semifinal game. The other semifinal game features the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds.

The SoCon Tournament champion receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The league also announced on Thursday that Furman would host the 2019 SoCon Tournament and that Mercer is slated to be the site of the 2021 tourney.
