MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Fans will get their first look at the 2017-18 Central Michigan gymnastics team on Sunday (3 p.m.) when the Chippewas host their annual Showcase at McGuirk Arena.
The event serves as a de facto intrasquad scrimmage in which all of the Chippewas on the roster will compete.
It will follow a prototypical meet beginning with vault and moving to bars, then beam and closing with floor exercise.
“It prepares our athletes for competition,” said Jerry Reighard, who is in his 33rd year as CMU’s coach. “It gives the fans a chance to see our team in a competitive atmosphere.”
In recent years, the Chippewas have unofficially opened the season with Excite Night. Sunday’s event will include several aspects that Excite Night had traditionally offered, but the Showcase will be more about competing.
Reighard will again take the microphone to explain routines and scoring, and a post-Showcase autograph session for kids is on the docket.
Admission is free. The Chippewas open the season on Saturday, Jan. 6, at McGuirk Arena with a meet against Illinois State.
