MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Sue Guevara didn’t have to look far to fill her vacant assistant coaching position.
Courtney Shelton, a former video coordinator with the Chippewas, has joined Guevara’s staff as an assistant. She is the second assistant to join the staff in recent weeks. The first was Murrial Page, who was named to a post two weeks ago.
“Hiring two new positions, it was very important to me that the fit was good,” said Guevara, who is entering her 11th season as CMU’s head coach and led the Chippewas in March to their first regular-season Mid-American Conference championship since 1985. “I’ve been so fortunate to have really good chemistry with my staff. That was first and foremost.”
Shelton served as the video coordinator under Guevara for two seasons, 2014-15 and ’15-16, helping lead the Chippewas to a Mid-American Conference West Division title and a WNIT berth. She spent last season as an assistant at Northwood, which finished 16-11, including 13-8 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Shelton, who earned four letters and was a three-year starter at Northern Illinois, will work under Guevara and associate head coach Heather Oesterle, who is entering her eighth year at CMU. Shelton earned her degree in communications from NIU in 2012, and later completed her Master’s at CMU.
“With Courtney, she knows me, she knows Heather, she knows how we work, our system,” Guevara said. “She’s a former student-athlete who played in the MAC is an alum of CMU. She understands how we do things here and she’s very defensive minded. She’s a very fundamental defensive teacher. I couldn’t be happier to have her come back and work with us.”
