SETTING THE SCENE
The Central Michigan cross country teams will take on Oakland in a dual meet on Friday in Rochester. The men with run a 4K race, the women a 3K.
Both teams competed in the Greater Louisville Classic. Oakland edged Central Michigan in both races, taking a 19th place finish in the women’s race and 13th in the men’s, while the CMU women finished 23rd and the men placed 18th.
Both Chippewa teams will rest many frontline runners in Oakland; some will have only participated in three races through six weeks of the season, which should aid in keeping them fresh for the big meets later in the year, according to coaches Matt Kaczor and Jennifer Swieton.
• The Chippewa men’s team made its debut this week in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association rankings for the Great Lakes region, coming in at No. 13. Oakland’s men are ranked No. 11 in the region and are the highest-ranked team in the Horizon League.
• The CMU women remained at No. 15 in the regional rankings. They have been 15th throughout the entire season. Five MAC women’s teams – CMU, Eastern Michigan, Toledo, Miami (Ohio) and Bowling Green – are regionally ranked. Only the Big Ten, with six, has more ranked teams.

• Four of CMU’s top five runners on the men’s team set personal bests of at least 42 seconds in Louisville. Freshman Logan Kleam cut one minute off his former best time, and led CMU with a 59th place finish in 24 minutes, 38.4 seconds.
• Megan O’Neil recorded the highest finish among the Chippewa women at Louisville as she placed 48th in 17:26.5. O’Neil improved on her previous 5K best – which she set at the season-season opening Drenth Memorial – by about 2.5 seconds.
