Chippewa Wrestlers Head To Eastern Michigan

SETTING THE SCENE
The Central Michigan wrestling team will send about 20 wrestlers to the Eastern Michigan Open on Saturday at the Eagles’ Convocation Center.

LAST WEEK
The Chippewas put on a strong showing at the season-opening Michigan State Open as 15 CMU wrestlers placed in the top six in their respective weight classes in either the Open Division or the Freshman/Sophomore Division.

STANDOUTS
• CMU junior Justin Oliver went 4-0 to place first in the open 149-pound division at MSU. Oliver was named the Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week for his performance at MSU.

• Chippewa freshman Collin Lieber placed first at 174 in the Freshman/Sophomore Division. He finished 4-0 on the day, winning two matches by technical fall and one by major decision.

SITTING OUT
Several CMU front-liners will not participate at EMU. Among them are Oliver, Mason Smith (141), Colin Heffernan (157), Logan Parks (165), CJ Brucki (174), Jordan Ellingwood (184) and Newton Smerchek (285).

NEXT
The Chippewas entertain Michigan State in a nonconference dual meet at McGuirk Arena on Friday, Nov. 17 (7 p.m.). It is CMU’s only home appearance until Jan. 7, 2018, when it plays host to Ohio in a Mid-American Conference dual.
