MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The Central Michigan wrestling team will open the 2017-18 season with a pair of in-state open tournaments, the first at Michigan State, the second at Eastern Michigan.
The Chippewas, ranked 18th in the WIN Magazine Preseason Power Rankings and Index, unveiled their schedule today, Thursday. It includes trips to two of the most prestigious tournaments in the land, the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, hosted by Northwestern.
Also on the schedule are nonconference duals with Virginia Tech, South Dakota State, North Dakota State, Purdue, Southern Illinois and Michigan. All are on the road.
The Chippewas' home opener, and their only home event before the new year, is a dual scheduled for Friday, Nov. 17, with Michigan State. CMU opens the Mid-American Conference season at Northern Illinois in mid-December.
CMU will spend the entire month of January at home, entertaining MAC foes Ohio, Missouri and Buffalo. The Chippewas close the regular season with a dual at Michigan, and then host the MAC Championships March 3-4 at McGuirk.
It marks the first time since 2010 that CMU has hosted the league championships.
"We're pretty excited about that," said CMU coach Tom Borrelli, whose projected lineup features six wrestlers who qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2017. "We won't have the long bus ride, our guys will be more rested than they normally are for the MAC Championships. We'll be excited to perform well in front of the home crowd."
The NCAA Championships are scheduled for March 15-17 at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.
"Our schedule is very good this year," Borrelli said. "We're trying to test ourselves early and then we focus more on the conference in January and February. We think the schedule overall will prepare us very well for the year-end tournaments."
CMU's annual Intrasquad Meet is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 27 (7 p.m.) at McGuirk Arena.
