Jenny Swieton Named Director of CMU Track and Field, Cross Country

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- Jenny Swieton comes to Central Michigan with a solid background, a Chippewa pedigree, and strong area ties.

Swieton was named today as the Chippewas' director of track and field/cross country by CMU Director of Athletics Michael Alford. Her official start date with CMU is Monday, Aug. 14.

A Flint native, Swieton was a student-athlete at CMU, running on the track and field and cross country teams while working toward her bachelor's degree, which she earned in 2002. She obtained her master's degree in sports administration from CMU in 2011.

"We welcome Jennifer Swieton back to Central Michigan," Alford said. "We're fortunate to have a coach who combines her experience and her knowledge of the area, and I am absolutely certain that she will fully employ those tools as she builds a program."

Swieton comes to CMU from Murray State in Kentucky, where she has served as the director of men's and women's cross country and of women's track and field since 2010.

"I loved my time at Central Michigan and in Mount Pleasant. It always felt like home to me," she said. "I couldn't be any happier to be a Chippewa again. I've always been a Chippewa in my heart, but now I get to show it inside and out."

Swieton was the Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year for women's outdoor track and field in 2013 and oversaw a stable of athletes who won a combined 24 league championships and earned 54 All-OVC honors. Three times under Swieton Murray State student-athletes earned All-America honors and her athletes hold a combined 35 program records in indoor and outdoor track and field and cross country.

Three times, Murray State student-athletes earned league freshman of the year honors under Swieton, and two Racers earned the Athlete of the Championships at the OVC meet under her watch. She also coached one OVC Athlete of the Year, and two who earned Murray State Female Athlete of the Year Award.

Swieton served as an assistant in cross country and track and field at North Carolina at Greensboro from 2006-10 after serving one year in the same capacity at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa.

Swieton began coaching as a volunteer assistant with the Mount Pleasant High School program in 2001-02 while completing her undergraduate degree at CMU. She served as an assistant in track and field and in cross country in 2004.

Swieton holds numerous certifications and specialties from the United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association.
