MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Two Central Michigan football players were honored by the Mid-American Conference for their respective performances in the Chippewas’ 35-28 victory at Western Michigan last week.
Running back Jonathan Ward and punter Jack Sheldon were named the MAC West Offensive Player of the Week and the MAC West Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively.
Ward, a sophomore from Kankakee, Ill., had 213 yards from scrimmage – 132 yards rushing on 17 carries and 81 yards on four receptions – in leading the Chippewas to the victory against the rival Broncos.
Ward scored on a 29-yard run in the fourth to lead CMU’s 21-point fourth-quarter comeback.
Sheldon, a junior from Echuca, Victoria, Australia, averaged 44.2 yards on nine punts with a long of 60 yards on a rainy evening. He put the Broncos inside their 20-yard line three times.
The victory snapped a three-game losing streak to the Broncos and lifted CMU to 5-4 overall, 3-2 MAC. The Chippewas play host to Eastern Michigan, 3-6, 1-4, on Wednesday, Nov. 8 (8 p.m.) at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
