DETROIT, Mich. – Central Michigan was picked fourth in the Mid-American Conference West Division preseason poll of league media members at Ford Field.
The Chippewas garnered two first-place votes and 67 points. Toledo, with 11 first-place votes and 114 points, was picked to win the West.
Defending Marathon MAC Football Championship Game winner Bowling Green was an overwhelming pick to finish atop the East Division.
The Falcons, who return 16 starters from a team that finished 10-14, garnered 18 first-place votes and 144 points. Akron was a distant second in the East with 114 points and three first-place votes.
Defending West champ Northern Illinois was a close second to Toledo in the West Division, with 110 points and eight first-place votes.
Ball State was third with 82 points, followed by the Chippewas, Western Michigan (44 points) and Eastern Michigan (24).
Bowling Green was named on 11 ballots to win the 2014 Marathon MAC Championship Game, which is scheduled for Dec. 5 at Ford Field.
Toledo was named on six ballots, the Chippewas earned two ‘championship’ nods, and Northern Illinois and Akron picked up one each.
The Chippewas open the 2014 season at home on Thursday, Aug. 28, with a non-league game against Chattanooga. Their MAC opener is Saturday, Sept. 27, at Toledo.
