Chippewas Open Season With 82-66 Win Over Appalachian State
11/3/2025 10:52:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Tamario Adley leads Central Michigan with 22 points and seven rebounds; Logan McIntire hits a game-high four 3-pointers and finishes with 14 points; Chippewas hit 51 percent of their shots.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.—Tamario Adley scored a game-high 22 points and Logan McIntire hit a game-high four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points as Central Michigan built an early first half lead and never looked back in claiming an 82-66 season opening victory over Appalachian State Monday night at McGuirk Arena. The contest was being played as part of the MAC/SBC Challenge.
The victory also marked head coach Andy Bronkema's first win in his first game at CMU. The entire 15-player Chippewa team was making its season debut in Mount Pleasant.
"I thought the guys played well together," Bronkema said. "A few guys didn't play the way they wanted to and still found ways to impact the game, but several others stepped up, and I think you'll find that with this team all year. You saw a glimpse of our style of play and a team that fights for each other. That should be a team that you can really rally behind and cheer for and get to know the players on a personal level and really believe that they're representing the school well because they are."
"I'm proud of what these guys have done since April. We see the vision moving forward and there wasn't going to be a way to have a negative after this game tonight—win or lose. We're off to the right start, we're doing the right things, we're doing them daily. We've got the right culture of working hard, buying in, listening to coaching, getting better every day. That culture has been set; we have to maintain it because there will be adversity along the way. We passed the test today; there will be other tests. The big thing is to reach our full potential. Everything was going to be positive, and the win was the cherry on top."
Central Michigan converted 51.7 percent (30-58) of its field goals and outrebounded the taller Mountaineers 43-33. The Chippewas hit 8-17 3-pointers, outscored App. State 40-22 in the paint, and dished out 14 assists. Adley converted 8-12 field goals, hit 3-3 3-pointers, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out three assists. McIntire hit 4-6 field goals and had six rebounds, Keenan Garner scored nine points, Nick Mullen added eight points, and Phat Phat Brooks finished with seven points.
Bronkema was impressed with Adley's play but it was nothing that he hadn't seen before from his senior guard.
"I see it from Tamario every day. He's a great rebounding guard, he's super athletic, he's got a nose for the ball. He has a license to go get the ball. I've seen him play for years. It's no surprise to me. Tamario's been blessed with gifts, and he's worked hard to enhance them."
The Chippewas built a 38-26 lead at halftime. The Chippewas used a 14-0 run to take 22-7 lead at the 9:38 mark. Adley scored on a layup in the paint, Rodney Johnson, Jr. scored on a turnaround shot in the post, and Phat Phat Brooks followed with a 3-point play on a driving layup. Brooks followed with another layup for a 17-7 lead, Garner added another 3-point play on a driving layup, and Adley made it 22-7 on a turnaround jumper in the paint.
Bronkema was proud of the way his team battled.
"You've got to play hard and battle on the glass," Bronkema said. "Winning the rebounding battle was going to take a lot of heart. As far as the stops on defense, we stayed within our system, continued to communicate and played effective defense."
CMU hit five 3-pointers and Adley scored 15 points in the second half. It was McIntire who opened the second half with back-to-back 3-pointers and Adley followed with a layup to give the Chippewas a commanding 18-point lead (46-28) with 17:01 to play. Minutes later, CMU pushed its lead to as many as 20 points.
App State would cut the lead down to as few as 12 points (74-62) with 3:40 to play.
Kasen Jennings led App State with 21 points and drew 10 fouls, while Alonzo Dodd scored 11 points.
"We fed off the crowd as you should when you're at home," Bronkema said. "It was a great home atmosphere. If you attended the game and you enjoyed what you saw, tell someone else and bring them to the game. I really appreciate the people that came out. There are a lot of friends and family, former players, former players that coached me, coaching friends, and friends that came out to check us out."
"The identity of the team is how can everybody use their talents to impact the game and impact winning. You're going to hear me say impact winning a lot. It's the expectation of every one of these guys. These guys are confident because they put the work in. That's how you can be confident because you put the work in. It's the expectation for each one of these guys to play to their strengths and use their superpowers within the game and within the system and be confident in it. I think they were tonight."
The Chippewas started Adley, Brooks, and McIntire at guard, Nathan Claerbaut at center, and Keenan Garner at forward.
Central Michigan won its fourth consecutive MAC/SBC Challenge game and improved to 4-1 in the event. CMU also improved to 2-0 all-time vs. Appalachian State.
Next up, Central Michigan travels to Peoria, Ill. to play at Bradley on Saturday, Nov. 8. Tipoff is at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT.
