Patty Superb As Baseball Wins Series Opener At Eastern

YPSILANTI, Mich. – A phenomenal defensive effort and an equally active offense propelled the Central Michigan baseball team past Eastern Michigan on Friday, 7-1, in the opener of a four-game Mid-American Conference series at the Eagles' Oestrike Stadium.
The Chippewas improved to 33-15 and 25-6 in the league and still trail first-place Ball State by 1 ½ games. The Cardinals opened a four-game series with Ohio on Friday with an 11-5 victory, improving to 27-5 MAC.
EMU is 21-28, 15-18. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday (1 p.m.) before closing the series on Sunday (1 p.m.).
Jordan Patty (6-3) recorded his 23rd career win, moving into a tie for No. 6 on the Chippewas' career wins list. He struck out five across eight innings, walking three and allowing eight hits.
Ryan Insco pitched a perfect ninth.
"It's great to have (Patty) back and healthy," CMU coach Jordan Bischel said. "He felt really good last week but when you've gone a few weeks without going deep in a game, I think it affected his command and his stamina a little bit, but he built off of that today.
"He had a really competitive outing. The guy's won a lot of games for us and today was just another great performance in a really outstanding career."
CMU led, 3-0, in the fifth inning when Patty's shutout was broken up by Logan Hugo, who led off the inning with a homer.
The Chippewa defense clamped down after that, turning two double plays and an attempted steal of home by catcher Nick Dardas. Patty, a former infielder, also turned in a pair of assists with diving stops. The Chippewas did not a commit an error on the day.
Dardas "earned it, being out there for the whole game today," said Bischel of the sophomore catcher. "Seeing him go a little longer in some of these games, his catching has been really good and that's the starting point right there, but he's also been having some really good at-bats.
"He's getting on base and has been hitting some balls hard. As a whole, I thought our defense today was maybe the best we've played all year, and our catcher has a big part in that."
The Chippewas added four insurance runs in the ninth, as Jakob Marsee, Danny Wuestenfeld, Drew Lechnir and Aidan Shepardson each picked up an RBI.
Mario Camilletti had three hits to lead the Chippewas' nine-hit attack. Robby Morgan finished with two hits, and he gave the Chippewas a 1-0 lead in the fifth when he scored on a passed ball.
Marsee, who followed Morgan's run with a two-run single, finished with two hits and three RBI.
"We've really got to take care of ourselves going into (Saturday)," Bischel said. "As much as we love playing in 80-degree weather, we're not really acclimated to it, so we'll need to rest, drink water and take care of ourselves because it is going to be a long day.
"I really thought we played good baseball today, so now the key is if we can hit the reset button and be ready to roll again tomorrow."
