Wuestenfeld's slam, outstanding pitching highlight 9-0 win over Bowling Green
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Danny Wuestenfeld's first career grand slam highlighted the Central Michigan baseball team's 9-0 victory over Bowling Green on Sunday at the Falcons' Steller Field, as the Chippewas swept their fourth consecutive Mid-American Conference series.
The Chippewas improved to 23-10 overall and 17-1 in league play. They have won 17 consecutive MAC games and 13 in a row overall. Their last lost came on March 27 at Iowa. CMU leads the MAC by two games over second-place Ball State, which is 15-3 after falling on Sunday to Akron, 4-3.
The MAC schedule has reached the midway point.
"More than anything, we just want to keep working to get better," CMU coach Jordan Bischel said. "Good teams should get better as the year goes on and I feel like we have, so now (next) week we just want to put in the time to make some strides in the right direction. We're getting close to finals (exams) and it's a busy time for guys, so it's about having good time management, picking what we're going to work at, and keep moving forward."
CMU will play host to nonconference Madonna on Tuesday, April 19 (3 p.m.) before starting a four-game series with Akron (11-24, 9-15) on Friday, April 22 (3 p.m.) at Theunissen Stadium.
Wuestenfeld's blast, his team-leading fifth of the season and fourth in his last 10 games, came during a six-run fifth inning.
"Danny, as the season's gone on, is probably our most improved player," Bischel said. "Last year was hard for our freshmen, we had the COVID seniors who really logged a lot of playing time, and we had some talented guys who were not playing a lot. I think that's impacted him early this year in terms of not having a lot of experience. As the season's gone, the experience has really benefitted him, that was a huge hit today."
The Chippewas sent 10 batters to the plate in the fifth, and greased the wheels with small ball before Wuestenfeld delivered the big blow.
The Chippewas used two singles, a stolen base and three bunts – one a safety squeeze – in taking a 2-0 lead. They then got back-to-back walks to load the bases for Wuestenfeld, who delivered CMU's second grand slam in five days. Jakob Marsee hit a grand slam in CMU's 21-8 victory over Oakland last Tuesday.
The Chippewas added two insurance runs in the seventh on an Aidan Shepardson bases-loaded walk and a Drew Lechnir sacrifice fly. Lechnir delivered an RBI single in the ninth.
Logan Buczkowski and Jake Jones combined for the three-hit shutout. Buczkowski (2-1) went six innings for the win; Jones went the final three for his fourth save. They combined to strike out nine.
Wuestenfeld, Lechnir and Shepardson had two hits each in leading the Chippewas at the plate.
The Chippewas outscored the Falcons, 45-16, in the series and have scored 66 runs in their last five games. They lead the MAC with 301 runs.
The 17 consecutive victories tie the 2019 squad for the longest win streak against MAC opponents in Bischel's four years in charge of the program. In 2019, Bischel's squad won its final 14 regular season MAC games to claim the regular season championship and then won three straight games in capturing the conference tournament.
