Baseball Drops Weekend Finale In South Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. – The hits were scarce for the Central Michigan baseball team on Sunday as the Chippewas closed their season-opening trip to Coastal Carolina with a 10-0 loss to West Virginia at Coastal's Springs Brooks Stadium.
The Chippewas (0-3) are scheduled to play a four-game nonconference series next weekend at Western Kentucky. The Chippewas and Hilltoppers play the opener on Friday, Feb. 25 (4 p.m.).
"We're in a spot in our program where we take the field and expect to win, and we didn't have that result at all," CMU coach Jordan Bischel said. "So, we're disappointed, but at the same time, the teams we played (this weekend) are nationally relevant, quality programs."
Mario Camilletti had two hits to lead the Chippewas on Sunday. Adam Proctor and Garrett Navarra each singled.
Mountaineer starter Chris Sleeper allowed two hits, struck out five, and walked one over five innings for the win. CMU struck out 11 times against West Virginia pitching.
Senior right-hander Logan Buczkowski started for CMU and took the loss. He allowed four runs on two hits, struck out two, and walked two over 1 2/3 innings.
Drew Alsobrooks, Ben Vitas, Clayton Brock, Ryan Culley and Jake Jones worked in relief for the Chippewas, who surrendered 15 hits.
West Virginia and Coastal Carolina "are really good, well-coached teams and they did a great job taking advantage of basically all of our mistakes," Bischel said. "There is a lot to learn, and that's the big key. Obviously, we're not happy about the result, but what did we learn and where do we go from there?
"We'll be challenged again. Everybody we play in the nonconference schedule is a quality opponent. We're going to have to get home and get a good couple of good practice days in, get our legs under us, and get ready to turn it around next week."
