MOUNT PLEASANT -- The Central Michigan women's basketball team found a way to win on Monday night. It topped Dartmouth, 62-61, with another three-point play in the final second of the game.
The Chippewas improve to 6-2 on the season.
Desiree Eidson (Bowling Green, Ohio/Jr.) led the offense with a 20-point, 11-rebound outing. It is Eidson's sixth straight double-digit scoring game and her third 20-point night on the season. Kendra Martin (Muskegon Heights/Jr.) chipped in 14.
The game came down to the final seven seconds when the Big Green took a two-point lead. CMU pushed the ball up the court and eventually found Laurie Henderson (Newark, Ohio/Jr.) down low . She drove the baseline and put up the final shot. Not only did the shot drop to tie the game, she drew the foul. With the match tied, Henderson clinched the victory on a game-winning free throw.
Despite shooting a scant 28.9 percent, CMU managed to control the first half of play. It jumped out to the early 6-2 lead before Dartmouth battled back in to the game and managed to hold the lead for three minutes. The Chippewas reassumed control of the game and took a 25-21 lead into the half.
CMU's first-half lead was safe for only the first three minutes of the second stanza. Dartmouth's 10-4 run to start the half gave it control for all but the final second of play. The Big Green lead hovered around the three-point range but it was up by as much as five points with three minutes left. The Chippewas' 9-3 surge to end the game was all it needed to walk off the court with a one-point win.
The Chippewas return to action on Friday, Dec. 21, when they play Long Island in the Southwest Lobo Shootout in Albuquerque, N.M. CMU will then play either New Mexico or St. Bonaventure in the second round.
CMU returns home after the holidays when it hosts Northwood on Saturday, Dec. 29. Tipoff in Rose Arena is set for 2 p.m.
