MOUNT PLEASANT – Ali Pettit handcuffed the Mid-American Conference’s top hitting team on Saturday as the Chippewas posted a 2-0 victory over Bowling Green.

Pettit allowed just one hit while fanning four. BGSU entered the game with a MAC-best .281 team batting average.

“Pettit pitched an awesome game,” coach Margo Jonker said. “She was hitting her spots, the ball was moving well and she changed speeds. (Amy) Hudson made some key plays down the line at third and our entire defense was outstanding.”

The Chippewas had five hits and took advantage of one Falcon fielding error to push across a pair of runs.

CMU opened with an unearned run in the first frame. Tracy Kaatz reached on a throwing error and she moved to second on a Suzie Giroux groundout. Amy Hudson then delivered an RBI double to the gap in left center to give CMU an early lead.

The Chippewas added a run in the fifth with three straight singles by Kim Cozat, Kaatz and Suzie Giroux. Giroux’s two-out hit up the middle scored Cozat from second but the inning ended when Kaatz was thrown out trying to take third after a throw home.

A two-run cushion was all CMU needed as Pettit gave up just a second-inning single. Ashley Zirkle hit a come-backer up the middle that just passed Pettit’s outstretched glove. Zirkle was sacrificed over to second and advanced to third on a wild pitch, but Pettit recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat. After giving up the leadoff hit in the second, Pettit retired 18 straight batters.

She gave up just one first-inning walk as she earned her fourth victory of the week and improved to 12-6 overall.

First team All-MAC pick Hayley Wiemer took the loss for BGSU giving up the two runs (one earned) while fanning four. She walked one while falling to 11-5.

The two teams will play again on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. CMU will have a pregame ceremony to honor seniors Jacque Benedict, Lindsey Calme, Stephanie Crews, Jill DeRoche and Katie Horvath.
