MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – With four returning All-Mid-American Conference performers and a talented group of newcomers, the Central Michigan volleyball program opened preseason camp Saturday morning with its first practice inside McGuirk Arena.
Head Coach Erik Olson’s squad opened their first day together with jump testing and ball control drills before pumping up the energy in the arena with a high-intensity pepper drill.
“It’s phenomenal to get the athletes back in and work with them to make them better people,” Olson said. “There is a lot of learning going on and there is a lot of getting better going on. We want to contend for a championship and certainly we are better than we were last year. That’s what it’s all about; getting better and better everyday.”
Senior libero Jenna Coates and junior outside hitter Kaitlyn McIntyre, both All-MAC First Team selections last season, return for the Chippewas. Senior setter Kelly Maxwell (Second Team) and sophomore middle blocker Angelique White (All Freshman) also are back after impressive 2012 campaigns.
In total, the Chippewas’ roster features four seniors, three juniors, four sophomores and four freshmen. Melissa Fuchs, Andrea Gothard, Jessica Meichtry, Taylor Robertson and Danielle Thompson all practiced in the Maroon and Gold for the first time Saturday morning.
CMU will host its annual Maroon and Gold scrimmage in just 14 days on Saturday, August 24 at 3 p.m. inside McGuirk Arena for its first competitive action. The regular season begins August 31 at the Oakland Invitational where the Chippewas will take on the host Golden Grizzlies.
