Eight Soccer Student-Athletes Named Academic All-MAC

MOUNT PLEASANT - Eight Central Michigan women's soccer student-athletes were named Academic All-Mid-American Conference Monday, the league office announced.

All four of CMU's seniors, Chelsi Abbott, Claire Horton, Bethany Allport and Liesel Toth, were joined by juniors Bailey Brandon, Stefanie Turner, Ashley Mejilla and Katie Slaughter to make up more than one-fifth of the team and tie with Toledo for the most selections.

This marks the second-straight year in which the Maroon and Gold featured eight Academic All-MAC selections.

Toth (Victor, N.Y./Victor) earned Academic All-MAC honors for the second-straight year after being named to the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District V Second Team, and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Scholar All-Central First Team and All-America Third Team. She sports a 3.86 grade point average as a health fitness major.

Abbott (Woodstock, Ont./St. Mary's) is also an Academic All-MAC selection for the second-straight  year. She was named to the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District V and NSCAA Scholar All-Central second teams. Abbott boasts 3.91 GPA as a biology major.

Allport (Lima, N.Y./Honeoye Falls) earned Academic All-MAC honors for the first time and holds a near-perfect 3.98 GPA as a finance major. She was also one of three Chippewas named to the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America Team in the fall, earning second-team honors.

Horton (Royal Oak, Mich./Royal Oak) is now a two-time Academic All-MAC selection after earning the honor as a junior as well. She was a first-team NSCAA Scholar All-Central selection and holds a 3.34 GPA as a dietetics major.

Brandon (Livonia, Mich./Livonia Churchill) earned Academic All-MAC honors for the second-straight year after also being named to the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America Third Team in the fall. She has twice earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors and carries a 3.91 GPA as a law and economics major.

Turner (Livonia, Mich./Livonia Churchill) is a first-time Academic All-MAC selection with a 3.92 GPA. A biology/biomedical sciences major, Turner earned third-team Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America honors in the fall.

Mejilla (Mississauga, Ont./Loyola Catholic) earned Academic All-MAC accolades for the second-straight season. The junior holds a 3.84 GPA as a health fitness major and was also named to the NSCAA Scholar All-Central Third Team.

Slaughter (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) rounded out the selections for the Chippewas, earning the award for the first time in her career. She sports a 3.91 GPA as a biochemistry major.
