Seniors Matt Berning and Sean Murnane, junior Mike Petrucci and sophomore Cody Wilson were selected to the academic all-conference squad. CMU's four honorees were tied for the second most in the conference.
Berning (Duisburg, Germany/Mexico (Mo.) HS) is a member of the Academic All-MAC team for the third consecutive season. He was an All-MAC first team selection in 2010 after leading the Chippewas in tackles (102), tackles for loss (13) and sacks (four). Berning also was a CoSIDA Academic All-America second team honoree in 2010.
Murnane (Green Oaks, Ill./Carmel HS) earns academic all-conference honors for the second consecutive season. The three-time All-MAC third team defensive lineman was a CoSIDA Academic All-District IV first team selection in 2010.
Petrucci (Milford, Mich./Milford HS) was named to the Academic All-MAC team for the first time in his career. He made a career-high 48 tackles last season and recovered a pair of fumbles, including one he returned 43 yards for a touchdown in a 52-14 win at Eastern Michigan.
Wilson (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) adds Academic All-MAC honors to his CoSIDA Academic All-District IV first team accolades. The All-MAC second team receiver led the Chippewas with 83 receptions, 1,137 receiving yards and five touchdown catches in 2010.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. The teams are selected by a vote of the conference's Faculty Athletics Representatives.
CMU has placed at least four individuals on the Academic All-MAC team every season since 2005.
