Chippewas and Kent State Renew Rivalry on the Mat Sunday

Mount Pleasant, Mich. -  The Central Michigan and Kent State wrestling programs will renew a heated rivalry Sunday afternoon in Kent, Ohio at 2 p.m.

The Chippewas (7-6, 3-2 MAC) are coming off a week in which they split a pair of duals versus No. 25 Ohio, 19-15, and No. 7 Missouri, 15-16. The Golden Flashes (8-7, 2-1 MAC) suffered their first Mid-American Conference loss Friday night versus Ohio, 21-16.

Ottinger Earns Weekly MAC Honor: Junior Mike Ottinger claimed a pair of wins over ranked opponents last week to earn Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week honors. Ottinger opened the week with a 2-1 decision over defending MAC champ and 2013 All-American Cody Walters of Ohio before earning a 4-3 decision over No. 17 Mikey England of Missouri. 

NCAA Releases First Coaches' Panel Rankings: The NCAA released its first of three coaches' panel rankings Thursday afternoon with six Central Michigan wrestlers ranked in the top 33 nationally. Sophomore Zach Horan received the highest ranking of any Chippewa as the coaches slotted him No. 7 at 141 pounds. Redshirt freshman Corey Keener (125), senior Joe Roth (133), senior Scott Mattingly (149), sophomore Lucas Smith (157) and junior Mike Ottinger (174) were also ranked. 

MAC Releases Second January Rankings: The MAC office released its second set of coaches' rankings for the month of January Thursday with the Chippewas slated to finish fourth at the MAC Championships March 8. Northern Iowa was picked to win the title with 20.0 team points, while Missouri (18.5 points) and Ohio (17.0 points) are still in front of the Maroon and Gold. Junior Mike Ottinger moved into the No. 1 slot at 174 pounds, while sophomore Lucas Smith moved up to No. 2 at 157 pounds. 

CMU vs. Kent State: The Chippewas hold a slight 24-20 edge over the Golden Flashes in the all time series as they have taken five of the last seven meetings. Kent State defeated CMU in Kent, Ohio in 2012, 22-13.
