Chippewas Shutdown by UNLV's Fedde, 5-0

Las Vegas, Nev. - Central Michigan was unable to find an answer for UNLV preseason All-American Erick Fredde Friday night, falling in its season opener at Wilson Stadium, 5-0.

Fedde gave up just one hit and struck out 11 Chippewas over 7.1 innings, retiring 17 straight following a double by freshman Logan Regnier

Regnier gave the Chippewas an early scoring chance when he doubled down the right field line and stole third with two outs in the top of the second, but Fedde got junior Tyler Huntey to ground out to first to end the threat.

The Rebels took the lead in the bottom of the frame thanks to a pair of CMU errors. Edgar Montes reached and advanced to second on the first error and later came around to score the first run of the game on a throwing error later in the frame.

UNLV extended its' lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run double by T.J. White and pushed it to 5-0 in the eighth a sac fly and a bases-loaded walk.

Senior Noel Santos ripped a one-out single in the top of the ninth and moved into scoring position on a single by junior Pat MacKenzie, but Brayden Torres induced a fielder's choice from junior Nick Regnier to earn the save.

Junior Jordan Foley suffered the loss for the Chippewas, giving up three runs - two earned - on five hits and a walk while striking out four over 5.2 innings.

Senior Kenton San Miguel pitched 1.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

The Chippewas and Rebels will be back on the field at Wilson Stadium tomorrow afternoon for a doubleheader beginning at 4:05 EST. Senior Pat Kaminska will start game one of the doubleheader, while true freshman Nick Deeg will make his first career start in the night cap.
