Central Michigan Returns Home to Host Intrastate Rivals

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The Central Michigan soccer team will continue MAC play for the first time at home under first year head coach Peter McGahey this weekend. 

• CMU will host rival Western Michigan on Friday, Oct. 4 at 4 p.m. and will continue its home stand against Eastern Michigan on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 1 p.m. Both games will be played at the CMU Soccer Complex. 

• CMU (2-7-1) began its conference play on a positive note defeating Kent State (6-4-0) on the road in a 1-0 effort on Friday, Sept. 27.

• CMU carried the momentum into Sunday, posting a 2-1 victory over Ohio (5-3-2). The win snapped Ohio's six-game unbeaten streak.

• Junior  goalkeeper Grace Labrecque started both games in net for CMU over the weekend. She tallied her fifth career shutout, stopping six shots against Kent State. Labrecque also recorded a save in the Chippewas defeat over the Bobcats on Sunday. Labrecque leads the team in starts (5), save percentage (.793)  and wins (2).

• Junior Morgan Wilcoxon scored the lone goal against Kent State, executing a deep strike past the goalkeeper in the 37th minute. The goal was Wilcoxon’s first of the season and fourth of her career. 

• Sophomore midfielder Kaelyn Korte recorded her first career goal in a Chippewa uniform when she netted a shot from the middle of the box off a Laura Gosse pass. Korte transferred to Central Michigan after playing her freshman year at Creighton. 

• Junior midfielder Emily Cooksey continued her strong offensive play this season, delivering the game winning goal on a highlight reel upper 90 strike from 30-yards out. Cooksey leads the Chippewa offense with two goals, four points, 21 shots and 12 shots on goal. 

• Western Michigan (4-3-2) began conference play at Toledo, posting a 5-1 win on Friday, Sept. 27. The Broncos returned home to defeat Northern Illinois 4-2 on Sunday, Sept. 29. 

• Freshman defender Megan Ross leads the Broncos in scoring with two goals, five points and posting a perfect shot on goal percentage this season.

• Junior forward Aubrey Sudomier has also made offensive contributions for Western Michigan this season, leading the team in (18) and shots on goal (8). Sudomier earned two assists in Western Michigan’s defeat over Northern Illinois last Sunday.

• Senior goalkeeper Michelle Watson has started every game in net this season for the Broncos. She recorded her lone shutout of the season against Cleveland State in a 1-0 effort at home on Sept. 1.

• Eastern Michigan (5-4-1) is currently on a four-game win streak, scoring at least four goals in each game. The Eagles began MAC play hosting two games at home over the weekend, defeating Northern Illinois 4-1 on Sept. 27 and Toledo 4-3 on Sept. 29.

• Junior forward Bianca Rossi was named Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Week for her performance over the weekend. Rossi recorded an overall six points, scoring two goals and tallying two assists. Russell was an All-MAC First Team selection last season.

• Senior midfielder Cara Cutaia and junior forward Angela Vultaggio have made major contributions for Eastern Michigan’s offense this season. Cutaia, who scored a goal against Toledo last Sunday, has six goals, four assists and 16 points. Vultaggio, who recorded a goal against Northern Illinois last Friday, has five goals, four assists, 20 shots on goal and 32 total shots.

• Megan McCabe has started every game for Eastern Michigan this season. The sophomore goalkeeper recorded five wins this season while making 50 saves with a .758 save percentage.

• CMU continues its four-game home stand next week when the Chippwas host Toledo on Friday, Oct. 11 at 4 p.m. and Northern Illinois on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 1 p.m.
