Nate Ghena won the men's race and Krista Parks took second in the women's race as the Chippewas kicked off their season on Friday in Mount Pleasant.
Ghena & Parks Lead CMU at Drenth

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan men’s and women’s cross country team kicked-off the season on Friday, Aug. 30, at the 28th Annual Jeff Drenth Memorial Race.

Senior Krista Parks finished runner-up with a time of 18:12 to lead the women’s team, behind winner Rachele Schulist of Michigan State.

Sophomores Kelly Schubert and Alyssa Dyer finished fifth and sixth overall in 18:41, and 18:44 respectively.

Transfer Abbey Kelto ran her first race for the Chippewas in 19:05 en route to an eighth place finish.

Associate head coach Matt Kaczor was pleased with the team’s performance on the day.

“I felt like we had some good things going on today,” Kaczor said. “The future looks pretty good.”

Sophomore Nate Ghena ran a 5k career-best 15:48, crushing his previous personal best of 16:35. Ghena’s performance coasted him to a first place finish in front of teammate Spencer Nousain, who placed second with a 15:57. Nousain’s second place finish marks the first collegiate race for the redshirt freshman.

Junior Tanner Pesonen finished in 16:22, taking eighth on the day.

The Chippewas travel to East Lansing, Mich., for the Spartan Invitational Friday, Sep. 13.
