Sophomore Kyla Walworth and freshman Craig Mauldin hit qualifying marks this weekend at the University of Louisville's Lenny Lyles-Clark Wood Invite, Friday, Apr. 19. Walworth threw for a personal best in the discus,160-10, while Mauldin jumped a qualifying distance of 46-00.00 in the triple jump.
Strong Team Performance Leads Chippewas

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Central Michigan track and field posted a strong team performance at the Lenny Lyles-Clark Wood Invite at the University of Louisville on Friday.

“It was a very good meet; everyone came together and performed. The weather was not what we hoped for but it was a good team performance to prepare for MAC Championships,” said Director of Track and Field Willie Randolph.

In the duals, the Chippewas' women's team beat Eastern Tennessee State (80.5-62.5) and Southeast Missouri State (77.5-56.50) but fell to Louisville, 91-63. The men's team beat Eastern Tennessee State (77.5-56.50), tied Southeast Missouri State (67-67) but lost to Louisville, 100-59.

The women’s 4x400 relay team finished with the fastest time Friday. Sophomores Ravyn BaxterEmma Fishnick and Bridget Doughty and junior Shawntoreah Turk combined for a time of 3:52.36.

Turk also took first in the 400m race with a 2013 MAC Outdoor Championship qualifying time of 55.86. In the men’s 400, junior Clay Holman claimed second with a time of 49.20.

Doughty and Fishnik took second and third, respectively, in the 400m hurdles. Doughty ran 1:03.08, while Fishnik ran 1:05.08. Junior Megan Heffner followed in fourth with a time of 1:05.11.

Freshman Joe Amado took second in the men’s 400m hurdles with a time of 57.58.

In the 100m and 200m races, sophomore Diamond Hamilton and junior Kelsey Ritter took second and third in both races. Hamilton took second in the 100m with a 12.07 time, and third in the 200m with a time of 25.18. Ritter took second in the 200m (25.13), and third in the 100m race (12.36).

In the men’s 100m race, sophomore Dee Smith finished fourth with a time of 11.00, senior Renaldo Powell took sixth with a time of 11.11, and freshman William Askew followed in seventh with a time of 11.16.

Askew took fifth in the 200m with a time of 22.69.

Powell’s 14.15 second run in the 110m hurdles gave him a second-place finish. Freshman Chaz Bradshaw took third with a time of 15.04.

In the field events, freshman Devene Brown led the way with a first place finish in the women’s discus. She threw for a mark of 165-05. Sophomore Kyla Walworth placed third with a qualifying mark of 160-10, which was also a personal-best throw.

Brown also took fifth in the in the shot put with a mark of 44-09.5

Another first place finish was claimed by sophomore Milica Kulidzan throw for 135-05. Freshman Kyleigh Young took third with a throw of 128-04.

In the men’s throwing events, freshman Cole Walderzak took second with a personal record throw in the discus throw (171-07), and took seventh in the hammer throw (173-04). Freshman Brandon McCleese threw a 166-09 for a second place finish in the men’s javelin.

In the high jump, the Chippewas swept second through fourth place. Freshman Marsielle McBeam took second with an outdoor season-high of 5-07.25. Junior Sam Stein and Megan Heffner both jumped 5-04.25, but Stein took third on judges decision.

In preparation for the heptathlon, multi-event athletes senior Emily Dienhart and freshman Shaya Wilkerson competed in the javelin, triple jump and long jump. Dienhart took sixth in the long jump with a mark of 17-08 and seventh in the javelin with a mark of 86-03. Wilkerson took second in the triple jump (37-09.25) and seventh in the javelin (105-06).


COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Central Michigan track and field team sent their distance squad to Ohio State University to compete in the Jesse Owens Track Classic.

Seniors Maddie Ribant and Charnele Lyons earned top-10 finishes in their respective races. Ribant took fifth in the 5000m race with a time of 16:52.69, qualifying her for the MAC Outdoor Championships. Lyons took ninth in the 1500m race with a time of 4:34.01.

Sophomore Ben Wynsma finished seventh in the men’s 1500m race with a qualifying time of 3:51.73.

Sophomore Ethan Lievense ran the men’s 5000m race in 14:29.31 for an 11th place finish, also qualifying.

Freshman Monte Scott finished 10th in the mens 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:29.38.
