Central Michigan Closes Spring Trip With 9-1 Win Over Quinnipiac

Clearwater, Fla.- Central Michigan concluded the USF Tournament with a 9-1 win over Quinnipiac, finishing the tournament with a 3-2 record. Sophomore Carol Ann Sexauer finished the tournament with a team-high four RBIs and six hits.  

The Chippewas (10-8) took control over the Bobcats (2-11) in the third inning, scoring two runs to go up 4-0. Senior Macy Merchant started the inning with a single right field, and advance on a throwing error. She advanced to third when senior Summer Knoop grounded out to first base. Junior Brittney Horan hit a single to left field to score Merchant, and then stole second base. A double to left field by Sexauer scored Horan, extending the lead to 4-0.

Central Michigan added to the lead in the top of the fourth with a run by Raechel Zahrn. Karly Hansen reached based on a walk after freshman Katelyn Rentschler grounded out to short. Zahrn came in to pinch run, stole second base and was moved to third on a sac-bunt by freshman Taylor Waters. Merchant brought Waters home with a single to right field, making the score 5-0.

Quinnipiac answered in the bottom of the fourth inning with a homerun by Jordan Paolucci to center field.

The game ended after the fifth inning when the Chippewas put up four more runs to move the lead to 9-1. Sexauer started the inning by reaching on a fielding error by the shortstop. Junior Cory DeLamielleure advanced Sexauer with a single to center field. The bases were loaded by third baseman Trista Cox knocking a single to right. Renstchler brought home two baserunners with a single, and Cox scored on a fielder’s choice by Hansen. Hansen closed out the scoring when senior Summer Knoop brought her home with a single to left.

Central Michigan took an early lead, putting up two runs in the top of the first inning. Merchant reached on a bunt and advanced to second on a throwing error by the third baseman. Knoop brought Merchant in to score with single down the rightfield line. Horan represented the second run of the inning, reaching with a double to left-center. She scored on a sac-fly by Sexauer.

Knoop, Rentschler, and Sexauer finished with two RBIs each. Merchant finished the game 4-4 at the plate with two runs and an RBI. Morgan Yuncker pitched a complete game, giving up one hit and one earned run.

Paolucci led the Bobcats with one hit and a homerun. Hannah Lindsley pitched four innings, surrendering five earned runs and striking out zero batters. Sydney Robey finished the game for Quinnipiac, giving up five hits and two earned runs in 1.0 innings of work.

The Chippewas will be back in action on March 15 at Indiana against Illinois-Chicago and the Hoosiers. Central Michigan will play five games in three days of competition.
