MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Karly Hansen hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth handing Central Michigan a 10-0 mercy win over Akron.
The Chippewas (24-25, 9-10 MAC) got their first base runner in the bottom of the second, when Ashley Gilson drew a walk. Brogan Darwin followed with another free base, placing runners on first and second. Brittany Maurer found the strike zone against the next batter and recorded her first strikeout of the game. Chelsea DeLamielleure kept her hitting streak alive with a single to left, loading the bases with one out. Cory DeLamielleure hit a grounder to the short stop, who attempted the throw home, but the ball sailed over the catcher's head allowing two runs to score. Brittney Horan brought in two more runs in with a double to left center handing CMU a 4-0 lead after two innings.
In the top of the second, the second batter for the Zips (20-29-1, 4-14
Mid-American Conference), Kellie Roudabush, lined a double to right
center then advanced to third on a passed ball. Kara Dornbos got the next batter to pop out and followed up with her second strikeout of the game, keeping the Zips off the board early.
Molly Coldren recorded her 13th home run of the season, one short of tying the school's single season record set by her last season, in the bottom of the third with a line drive shot over the center field fence. Gilson reached base for the second consecutive time with a double to left center. Following Darwin's hit by pitch, a passed ball allowed both runners to move up a base. After a pitching change, a wild pitch by Andrea Arney allowed Gilson to score bringing the score to 6-0.
In the top of the fourth Akron got its leadoff batter on base with double to left center. Following a sacrifice fly to deep left field, which advanced the runner to third, Horan fielded a grounder at second that she threw home and recorded the out. CMU held a 6-0 lead heading into the bottom half of the inning.
Gilson recorded hit number two following a single to left center, driving in Macy Merchant who reached earlier in the inning, pushing the home team's lead out to 7-0.
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Hansen came on to pinch-hit for Merchant, and found the perfect time to record her first collegiate home run with the game winner over left center.
Both Gilson and Horan finished the game 2-for-2 at the plate with a RBI to lead the CMU offense.
Dornbos (11-14) threw her 13th complete game and fifth shutout of the season holding the Zips to only five hits.
Maurer (16-22) suffered the loss in the circle for the second consecutive day allowing three earned runs (six total) on four hits. Arney threw 2.1 innings allowing four runs on five hits.
The Chippewas will take a week off before hosting their last series of the regular season on Saturday, May 5 against Eastern Michigan.
