Public Recognition Awards are presented each year to teams with Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores in the top 10 percent in their respective sport.
The Chippewas' softball program scored a near-perfect 997 in this year's APR report, which covers the academic years of 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12. APR scores track a sport program's eligibility, graduation and retention of student-athletes; a perfect APR score is 1,000.
The Public Recognition Award is the latest academic honor for the Chippewas, who set a program record and led the Mid-American Conference with five academic all-conference selections in 2013. One of those five—senior Kara Dornbos—represented CMU on the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District first team.
On the field, the Chippewas produced a landmark season in 2013, claiming their 10th MAC Tournament championship and making their 13th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. CMU won 33 games in 2013, the most for the program since 2002, and eclipsed the 1,100-win mark in program history.
