ATHENS, Ohio – Central Michigan Softball defeated Ohio on Sunday to split the weekend series, 13-5 in five innings. The Chippewas concluded Mid-American Conference regular season play with a 15-7 record, good for the No. 3 seed in next week's MAC Tournament.
Junior Brittney Horan led the Chippewas (29-18) with four RBIs and four hits. Senior Brogan Darwin went 2-3 from the plate with three RBIs. Junior Cory DeLamielleure and freshman Katelyn Rentschler each recorded two RBIs. Junior Chelsea Sundberg earned her 10th win of the season, giving up six hits and three earned runs.
Adrienne Gebele led the Bobcats (26-27, 9-13 MAC) with three RBIs off of two hits. Lauren Gellerman went 2-3 with a homerun. Lauren McClary started in the circle, giving up five earned runs in one inning. Savannah Jo Dorsey pitched 1.2 innings, allowing four hits and four runs. Kaylin Clarke closed the game, striking out two batters and surrendering three runs in 2.1 innings.
Central Michigan blew the game open in the top of the third inning, extending its lead to eight. Sophomore CarolAnn Sexauer opened the inning with a walk and junior Lauren Bowman came in as a pinch runner. Rentschler hit a single to short before senior Summer Knoop hit into a fielder’s choice that caught Bowman at third. With two outs and runners on first and second, junior Raechel Zahrn singled to load the bases for Horan. A double to right center from Horan cleared the bases, and Horan moved to third on a wild pitch. After taking four balls, Darwin moved to first and then a double steal put Darwin on second and Horan came home to put the Chippewas up 10-2.
Ohio came back in the bottom of the third with a homerun by Gellerman, her second of the series.
Central Michigan didn’t let off the throttle, scoring two more runs in the fourth. Sexauer hit her 12th double of the season to set up Rentschler with one out. Rentschler moved into a tie for eighth in program history with her sixth homerun of the season, extending the Chippewas lead to 12-3.
The offensive surge continued in the fifth with a single to short by Horan. She stole second with two out and DeLamielleure at the plate. A single to right field by DeLamielleure scored Horan, giving Central Michigan a 13-3 advantage.
The Bobcats cut into deficit with a two-run homerun by Gebele, Ohio’s second of the game.
Central Michigan jumped out to an early lead, putting up four runs in the first inning. Senior Macy Merchant led off with a single to left field and advanced to second when Zahrn reached on an error. Horan singled to load the bases with no out brining Darwin to the plate. Darwin brought two runs home with a single and advanced to two on the throw. With no outs and runners in scoring position, DeLamielleure singled to score Horan and Darwin came home on the throw, putting the Chippewas up 4-0.
The Bobcats battled back in the bottom of the first, cutting Central Michigan’s lead to two. An error placed Erin Lashley on first and Gellerman advanced her on a single to second. The runners moved into scoring position after a wild pitch from Sundberg. A sac-fly by Chelsea Hortman scored Lashley. Gebele brought Gellerman home with a double to left center, bringing the sore to 4-2.
Central Michigan extended its back to four in the top of the second, going up 6-2. Merchant reached on single to right, and advanced all the way to third on an error fielding a ball off the bat of Zahrn. Horan scored Merchant with a single to center and moved Zahrn to third. A single by Darwin scored Zahrn.
The Chippewas will open the Mid-American Conference tournament on Wednesday, May 8.
