Gymnastics Rolls to a Victory in Season Opener

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan kicked off the 2014 gymnastics season with a win at home against the Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The Chippewa’s finished with a final score of 194.450, defeating the Blugolds (180.200).  

Returning gymnasts for the Central Michigan Chippewa’s posted high scoring performances in a great preview for the upcoming season. Junior Halle Moraw placed first on floor exercise with a 9.875. Sisters, Brittany and Kirsten Petzold, took the top two spots on vault as Brittany placed first with a 9.825 and Kirsten right behind her with a 9.800.

Sophomore Karlee Teet won an event for the first time in her career, taking first on bars with a 9.775 while junior Taylor Noonan captured the top spot on beam with a 9.850. Junior Becca Druien was to lone all-arounder, scoring a 38.000.

The Chippewas opened on vault, scoring a 48.475 with the Petzold sisters leading the way.  Up next was bars with CMU tallying a 48.500 as Teet, Kylie Fagan (9.725) and Druien (9.700) were the top three finishers.

In the third rotation, the Chippewas posted a 48.550 on beam with Noonan dominating the event with a 9.850. Second was Brittany Petzold with a 9.725 and Druien took third (9.675). CMU’s final rotation was floor and the squad finished strong with a 48.925.  The Maroon and Gold had three gymnasts score a 9.8 or better with Moraw first (9.875), Preslee Harrald second (9.825) and Brittany Petzold third (9.800).

The Chippewas take on Maryland this Friday, January 10, at 7 p.m., in McGuirk Arena.
