MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The 2014 Central Michigan softball team is looking for another successful season following its impressive campaign of a year ago.
In 2013, the Chippewas finished with 33 wins, the most since 2002, en route to surpassing the 1,100-win mark in program history and to their 10th Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship and 13th appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
CMU will open the season in February at the Rosemont Rumble in Rosemont, Ill. The three-day tournament will include games versus Drake, Illinois-Chicago and Illinois.
The team will then head south in mid-February to Arlington, Texas for the UTA Maverick Invitational. While in the Lone Star State, Central Michigan will take on host Texas-Arlington, South Dakota State and Missouri State.
The Chippewas will continue tournament play at the Cardinal Classic in Louisville, Ky in late February. The Maroon and Gold will face off against Northern Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky, IUPUI and Louisville.
Tournament play will conclude following the USF Under Armour Showcase in Clearwater, Fla. where the Chippewas will play 12 games in eight days. While in Florida the team will compete against Fordham, Providence, Chattanooga, Seton Hall, Villanova, South Florida, Boston University, Purdue, Connecticut, Long Island, Maine and Yale.
The regular season will open on March 26, with in-state foe Detroit in the Motor City.
The team will debut at Margo Jonker Stadium in the 2014 home opener on March 28, with a double header versus MAC opponent Akron. The Chippewas will continue the home stand with three more games against Ohio and IPFW.
Last year CMU won 15 games against MAC opponents and finished second in the West Division behind Ball State.
The team will look for similar success in MAC play this season, including when it heads to Ypsilanti to take on Eastern Michigan on April 5-6.
The Maroon and Gold will compete in an additional three non-conference games the remainder of the season against Oakland University, Michigan and Michigan State University on April 9, April 16 and April 23 respectively.
The regular season will conclude on a seven-game road trip, with six of the contests being conference match-ups.
Central Michigan will look to repeat as MAC Tournament champions in Akron, Ohio beginning on May 7.
The Chippewas will be returning their entire infield from last season in addition to the injured Chelsea DeLamielleure.
Coach Margo Jonker will be coaching the team in her 35th season for the Chippewas.
The CMU softball team will implement a variety of themed games during home contests this season such as Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day, Academic Success Day, Alumni Day, PEAK Day, Strike Out Cancer Day, Parents' Day and Senior Day. In addition to the themed days, there will be numerous in-game promotions. Dates for themed days are still pending.
