Mount Pleasant, Mich.- Central Michigan Softball won its seventh straight game, extending its win streak to 13 of the last 14 contests. The Chippewas blanked Toledo 3-0 on the arm of senior Kara Dornbos, who gave up three hits and earned her fifth shutout of the season.
Central Michigan dominated the game defensively and put up eight hits on the Rockets. In the fifth inning, sophomore CarolAnn Sexauer doubled with senior Macy Merchant on third and two outs to put the Chippewas up 3-0.
In the bottom of the second inning, sophomore Trista Cox singled short to reach base with one out. Junior Brittney Horan hit into a fielder’s choice, forcing Cox out at second. Senior Brogan Darwin followed Horan with a hit to second base, but a throwing error over to first allowed her to reach safely and bring Horan into score, giving Central Michigan the 1-0 lead.
The Chippwas extended their lead in the fourth. Sexauer looked at four balls before junior Lauren Bowman came in as a pinch runner. Freshman Katelyn Rentschler put a ball in play but the Rockets were unable to make a play at second allowing both runners to advance safely. With two on and one out, Horan knocked a long, fly ball to left field for a double, scoring Bowman from second.
Horan finished the game 2-3 with an RBI, a double and a triple. Merchant continued to be a tough out, going 2-3 with a run. Dornbos pitched back-to-back three-hit performances, blanking Toledo for her fifth shutout of the season and surrendering no extra base hits. She now has 14 complete games on the season and 62 in her career, moving her into fourth in Chippewa history.
Jessica Lemieux led the Rockets with two of the team’s three hits. Kristen Roznoski accounted for Toledo’s other base hit. Marla Gooding pitched 6.0 innings, giving up eight hits and two earned runs. She struck out two batters and walked one.
Central Michigan will be back in action tomorrow, April 21, for game two of the series against Toledo at 1 p.m. The Chippewas will look to continue their longest win streak of the season and earn its ninth win at Margo Jonker Stadium.
