Soccer Kicks Off Preseason Camp
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – After an emotional week, the Central Michigan soccer team came together for its first official practice under first-year head coach Peter McGahey on Friday morning. Under bright blue, sunny skies, the Chippewas trained for two hours, beginning their preparation for the 2013 season.

“I think the emotion of the first practice as we gathered together was really positive and constructive,” said McGahey. “I think the women were really excited to be together. I think they were intense, fun, and competed; they did the things we needed to do at practice today.”

CMU is coming off a highly successful 2012 season in which it went 15-7-1, including a 10-2 mark in MAC play, and earned the conference’s first-ever at large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Junior Laura Gosse (5 goals, 1 assist) and senior Jennifer Gassman (4 goals, 2 assists), both forwards, are the team’s top two returning scorers, combining for 21 points a year ago. Seniors Estee Outcalt and Tory Kinniard will be key on the defensive end in 2013. Junior Grace Labrecque, who started three games and logged 405 minutes between the pipes in 2012, will get the first shot at securing the starting goalkeeper spot.

“I think our focus now is one practice at a time, one pass at a time, one moment at a time and make sure we are present in each one and just try to do our best,” McGahey said. “That’s how we are going to tackle it – one game, one practice, one day at a time.”

The Chippewas will play their lone exhibition match of the 2013 preseason on Sunday, Aug. 18 (5 p.m.) when it hosts in-state foe Michigan State at the CMU Soccer Complex. Central will open the regular season one week later, on August 25, at home against Detroit (5 p.m.).
