CMU Hoops Quick Hitterst
• Central Michigan is 5-0 in MAC play for the second-straight season. The Chippewas’ 7-0 start last season is the best under head coach Sue Guevara.
• CMU’s last win at Kent State came on Feb. 9, 2008, 87-70. The Golden Flashes have taken the last two games inside the M.A.C. Center.
• Junior Crystal Bradford was named MAC West Player of the Week for the third-straight week Monday. The award is the 12th of her career, tying the conference record.
• Bradford also earned her first NCAA Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honor Tuesday.
• Sophomore Da’Jourie Turner matched a career high with 14 points Saturday versus Bowling Green, all of which came in the second half and overtime. CMU defeated BGSU, 82-79.
Junior Crystal Bradford has posted six-straight double-doubles and a league-best 11 entering Saturday’s contest. Bradford has scored in double figures in 15 of her 16 contests and has topped 20 points eight times. During MAC play, Bradford ranks first in rebounds (14.2), assists (5.6) and steals (3.6) and is second in scoring (19.6) and blocks (2.4)
The Crystal Bradford Award
If Bradford continues to win MAC West Player of the Week awards, the league might have to consider renaming the award. Bradford has won the award in three-straight weeks and five times this season. She has now earned the award 12 times, tying former BGSU star Lauren Prochaska’s record of 12 Player of the Week awards.
The Nation is Recognizing Too
Bradford also was named the NCAA Women’s Basketball Player of the week by the National Collegiate Athletic Association on Tuesday. This is the first time in her career she has earned National Player of the Week honors.
What a Comeback
CMU trailed Bowling Green by 11 points with under 3:00 to play only to close regulation on a 12-1 run and eventually pull off a win in overtime, 82-79. The record improved the Chippewas’ to 5-0 in the MAC for the second-straight season. Sophomore Da’Jourie Turner matched her career high with 14 points, all of which came in the second half and overtime.
Welcome to the Club
Senior Taylor Johnson became the third player this season to join Central Michigan’s 1,000-point club, joining senior Niki DiGuilio and junior Crystal Bradford. This marks the first time in program history that the CMU lineup has featured three 1,000-point scorers in the same season.
Junior Jessica Green is also on pace to score her 1,000th career point this season, needing to average just 8.0 points per game over CMU’s final 14 guaranteed games. CMU would be just the 10th program in NCAA history to have four different 1,000-point scorers on the same roster should Green accomplish the feat.
Senior Niki DiGuilio became the leader of men and women at Central Michigan for most three-point field goals made versus Toledo, passing former CMU men’s star Robbie Harman’s record of 233. DiGuilio now has 245 triples in her career and is on pace to become just the third player in MAC history to eclipse 300 career triples.
One Night, Two Milestones
Senior Niki DiGuilio reached a pair of milestones in her home state of Ohio on Dec. 30, becoming the program’s all-time leader in three-point field goals and the 23rd player in program history to score 1,000 points.
Three-Point Streaks to Watch
The Chippewas have made at least one three-point field goal in all 208 games coached under head coach Sue Guevara. DiGuilio also enters Saturday’s game with streak of 22 consecutive games with at least one made shot from behind the arc.
No team in the country played a non-conference schedule as tough as Central Michigan according to the Jeff Sagarin/CBN Women’s College Basketball Rankings. CMU played three top-25 opponents, while 10 of its’ 12 games were against 2013 postseason teams.
Bradford and Green Preseason All-MAC
Juniors Crystal Bradford and Jessica Green were each named to the Preseason All-MAC West Team as voted by the leagues’ coaches. The tandem returns as the Chippewas’ top two scorers from a season ago and are both on pass to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau in 2013-14.
Chippewas Tabbed Favorites
Central Michigan was a unanimous choice to win the Mid-American Conference West title and received nine of 12 votes to repeat at the MAC Tournament by the coaches in the leagues’ preseason poll. CMU returns 10 letterwinners and three starters from last season’s MAC Tourney championship squad.
